The 30-year-old was hoping to make a transfer to a high profile club after letting his contract run down at Aston Villa in the summer, but a knee injury has sidelined the centre back, who is still without a club.
Vlaar is currently training with former club AZ Alkmaar as he hopes to regain fitness and a return to England may be on the cards with the Liverpool Echo reporting that Everton are keen on the Dutch international.
Roberto Martinez reportedly hopes to add experience to his young defence and believes Vlaar will be the perfect man to do this, and provide competition for first choice duo John Stones and Phil Jagielka.
