Excelsior went into the game looking to end a three-match losing streak and they had the better of the first half. Jurgen Mattheij and Ryan Koolwijk both went close before Kalid Kharami forced Mickey van der Hart into a save on the stroke of half time.
PEC Zwolle barely created anything but two minutes into the second half they took the lead through Queensy Menig, who finished calmly after racing through one-on-one with the goalkeeper.
The home side struggled to react to falling behind and eventually PEC Zwolle sealed their victory two minutes from time when Django Warmerdam finished off Ryan Thomas’s cross from inside the penalty box.
The victory lifts PEC Zwolle up to 13th while Excelsior sit 10th.
