Riechedly Bazoer was restored to the starting line-up after missing the 2-2 draw with Celtic in midweek, and the midfielder should have opened the scoring on four minutes after being played through by Arkaduisz Milik, but his shot flew just wide of the post.
Excelsior defended resolutely but Ajax eventually found a way through them on 34 minutes as Anwar El Ghazi skipped through three defenders before sliding the ball past Filip Kurto. The winger now has seven goals for the season.
Before the break Ajax doubled their lead with Milik allowed too much space on the edge of the box, and the striker found the net with a fierce strike which proved too strong for Kurto, who got a hand on the ball but couldn’t keep it out.
Chances were few and far between in a scrappy second half with Jasper Cillessen having to tip a Kevin Vermeulen shot over the bar, while at the other end Milik was denied his second late on with Karami clearing his lob on the goal line.
Ajax move back above Heracles to the top of the table, while Excelsior remain 14th.
