GROENExcelsior moved level on points with Willem II in 15th place, with both sides looking to avoid the third bottom spot and a place in the end of season play-offs.

Groenendijk said, ”First and foremost the win is a relief that is always the case when you are involved in a tense relegation fight and you win.

“Willem II & Roda JC both lost this weekend so we are going to make sure of a tense relegation fight”

”I thought that we controlled the game tonight and did not give FC Groningen many chances. We did not play fantastic football but to go 2-0 up and survive when FC Groningen came back to 2-1 shows character. Overall I believe that we deserved our victory tonight.

”Everyone talks about exciting the title race between Ajax & PSV but the fight to avoid relegation is also tense.

“We have our destiny in our own hands and we have always stated that we want to stay up without being involved in the relegation play offs at the end of the season and we are currently 16th but only on goal difference. That means that we get Willem II & Roda JC back involved and the fact that we have won our last two home games also gives us confidence.

”If we can get points at home and of course we will try to pick up points away from home and we have proved we can do that but every game from now on will be tense and we are aware of that but we will enjoy our victory tonight”.
