Excelsior made it three wins in four games after seeing off ten-man Roda JC 1-0 in Rotterdam.

Excelsior went into the game having failed to win in any of their home games so far this season, with the club getting 13 of their 14 points away from Rotterdam.

The first half was a tight affair but Roda JC were reduced to ten men in the 36th minute when Mikhail Rosheuvel was shown a straight red card for a foul on Zakaria El Azzouzi.

With the man advantage, Excelsior took charge and they took the lead three minutes before the break through Luigi Bruins, who netted his fourth goal of the campaign.

Roda JC remained dangerous on the counter-attack in the second half, but in the 78th minute Excelsior were awarded a penalty after Christian Kum brought down El Azzouzi. Bruins took the spot kick but it was kept out by Hidde Jurjus.

The visitors failed to rally after the penalty miss and Excelsior held on to claim their first home victory of the campaign.

Excelsior climb to seventh while Roda JC are still bottom.
