Excelsior came from behind to defeat 10-man Willem II 2-1 in Rotterdam on Friday evening.

The past week saw stories linking Willem II and Eredivisie top-scorer Fran Sol with a move to AZ Alkmaar. The in-form Spaniard continued his fine form by netting the opener after fifteen minutes, tapping in a Fernando Lewis cross.

However, just before the half-hour mark it all went wrong for the visitors as Darryl Lachman saw red for bringing down Mike van Duinen in the box. Luigi Bruins scored from the spot to make it 1-1.

With a man extra, Excelsior took control and just before the break they took the lead when Stanley Elbers backheeled Khalid Karami’s cross into the net from close range.

The second half was a drab affair as Excelsior comfortably held on for the victory which moves them to within a point of Heerenveen in eighth and a possible play-off spot. Willem II sit 13th and seven points above the drop zone.
