The first half started quietly but burst into life on 37 minutes when Bradley Kuwas fired a lovely strike into the top corner from the edge of the box to give Excelsior the lead.
However, four minutes later Heerenveen equalised in fine fashion with Sam Larsson jinking through the home defence before guiding the ball into the net. Heerenveen then came close to taking the lead before the half-time whistle as Jerry St Juste took aim from distance, but the midfielder’s strike curled inches wide.
In the second half, Excelsior created the best chance to win the game but Stanley Albers couldn’t beat Erwin Mulder and the game ended in a draw.
The point sees Excelsior climb above Willem II in 15th while Heerenveen is twelfth.
