The deadlock was broken after only six minutes by the away side as Thomas Bruns clever quick free kick set Wout Weghorst in on goal and the striker lifted a lob over Tom Muyters.
Moments later Weghorst shot wide from a tight angle and Jaroslav Navratil also went close as Heracles completely dominated Excelsior. Finally on 37 minutes the second goal came as Weghorst netted powerfully into the top corner from just inside the box.
Less than a minute into the second half Excelsior pulled a goal back through Bradley Kuwas, but any chance of a comeback was ended just after the hour mark as Ramon Zomer headed in Navratil’s cross to seal Heracles win.
Heracles now temporarily move 4th, while Excelsior sit third bottom and still in the relegation zone.
