Excelsior struck late to defeat Sparta Rotterdam 3-2 and make it two losses in two games in charge for Dick Advocaat.

Advocaat’s first game in charge of Sparta saw them lose to Vitesse in midweek but he stated afterwards that he was sure the good results would come.

Against local rivals Excelsior, Sparta took the lead in the second minute with Milan Massop diverting the ball into his own net. However, Excelsior responded quickly and equalised in the fifth minute through Ali Messaoud.

In the 42nd minute the hosts were awarded a penalty and Loris Brogno netted from the spot to make it 2-1. However, Sparta once again conceded quickly as Messaoud tapped in his second on the rebound just before the break.

In the second half, Fred Friday and Deroy Duarte missed great chances to put Sparta ahead and in the final minutes they were made to pay when Anouar Hadouir scored a free kick to give Excelsior the win.

Sparta Rotterdam remain bottom of the table while Excelsior are 10th.
