Ajax took the lead halfway through the first half, when Lasse Schone picked the ball up outside the Groningen penalty area, and rifled a shot into the bottom corner.
Groningen went looking for an equaliser, and Kenneth Vermeer had to pull of a great stop to deny defender Eric Botteghin at the back post following a set piece.
In the second half, Ajax should have sealed the three points, when Bojan went on a jinking run past two defenders, but instead of passing to an unmarked Shone, decided to take on one more, and the chance was gone.
Straight up the other end, Groningen won a corner, and when Botteghin saw his header parried by Vermeer, Genero Zeefuik was on hand to poke home the equaliser.
Bojan then missed a great opportunity for Ajax, as the ball fell for him in the penalty are, following a knock down from Danny Hoesen, the on loan Barcelona man could only hit fresh air with his volley.
In the final minute, Groningen broke, and when Richairo Zivkovic headed on to an unmarked Filip Kostic, but the forwards shot came back off the post.
A disappointing draw for Frank de Boer’s side who are still to win away from home this season, and once again unable to hold onto a lead. Great determined play from Groningen though, and they bounce back from two disappointing performances against Go Ahead Eagles, and Cambuur.
