FC Twente have been relegated to the Eerste Divisie after an embarrassing 5-0 defeat to Vitesse Arnhem.

The Tukkers went into to the game four points adrift at the bottom of the table and needed to better the result of either Roda JC or Sparta Rotterdam to stay alive into the final weekend of games.

Twente started the game with plenty of possession but never troubled the Vitesse Arnhem defence. Five minutes before the break, Thulani Serero opened the scoring for Vitesse with a lovely strike.

Eight minutes into the second half, Tim Matavz doubled Vitesse’s lead with a header which seemed simple for Joel Drommel to save but the ball bounced over the goalkeeper and into the net.

Twente’s defence then fell apart as Mason Mount added the third on 67 minutes with a strike that just crossed the line off the crossbar. Moments later, Bryan Linssen acrobatically added a fourth before Matavz netted his second before the end to seal Twente’s fate.

Twente fall out of the top flight for the first time since 1984 while Vitesse are 6th and can start preparing for the European play-offs.
