Leroy Fer is staying at Swansea City after a deadline day move to Aston Villa fell through at the last minute.

The midfielder seemed certain to leave Swansea on Thursday with a move to Lille on the cards before Aston Villa became interested.

Fer was on his way to Villa Park, but at the last minute the deal fell through. Aston Villa instead signed Fer’s teammate Tom Carroll.

A statement on Swansea City’s website read, “Skipper Fer was linked with a deadline day move to Lille and Aston Villa, but has decided to remain with the Swans to give manager Graham Potter a double boost for the run-in.”

The 29-year-old has a contract at Swansea City until the summer.
