With league leaders Ajax triumphing earlier in the day, both sides went into their clash looking to keep up with the Amsterdammers. The first half saw Feyenoord create the best chance, with Michiel Kramer volleying into the stands from close range after being found by Tonny Vilhena. At the other end Kenneth Vermeer denied Jurgen Locadia the opening goal.
However, four minutes into the second half PSV found the breakthrough with Davy Propper beating Sven van Beek far too easily on the right before his cross was tucked in at the back post by Hector Moreno.
Feyenoord pushed forward looking for the equaliser, but Dirk Kuyt fired into the side netting before Kramer sent a header just over the bar. Kramer did eventually find the net, but the joy was short lived for the home crowd as the linesman’s flag went up against Eljero Elia.
Substitute Luciano Narsingh eventually settled the game for PSV on the counter attack, finishing calmly after gliding past a half-hearted challenge from Van Beek. It could have been worse for the home side before the end but Vermeer clawed out Luuk de Jong’s close range header.
PSV now remain three points behind Ajax, but Feyenoord now slip eight points adrift and Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side can not afford another slip up if they are to remain in the title race.
