Groningen have ended Feyenoord’s run of victories in the Eredivisie after holding Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side to a 1-1 draw at De Kuip.

vilhena headSix victories on the bounce have seen Feyenoord all but seal third place and a return to Europe, but they looked off the pace against Groningen, who constantly provided danger on the counter attack. After 24 minutes the away side took a shock lead as Michael de Leeuw got ahead of Sven van Beek to tap in Oussama Idrissi’s cross.

Feyenoord then went in search of the equaliser, but they had trouble finding the target with Dirk Kuyt and Eljero Elia seeing efforts go wide or over the bar. When Sergio Padt was finally called into action on the hour mark he easily claimed Michiel Kramer’s tame header.

Finally after 65 minutes the home side equalised through Tonny Vilhena who rose to head Jens Toornstra’s cross past Padt. Kuyt and Kramer then came close to finding the winner late on but Groningen held on to claim a point.

Feyenoord remain six points clear of AZ in fourth, while Groningen sit 10th.
