Giovanni van Bronckhorst decided to rest Dirk Kuyt for the visit of Groningen with Jens Toornstra taking his place in the starting line-up. That decision paid off with Toornstra giving Feyenoord the lead on 38 minutes, flicking Steven Berghuis cross into the corner of the net.
Midway through the second half, Toornstra settled the tie with a close-range finish into the top corner after some excellent footwork and a back-heel by defender Jan-Arie van der Heijden.
With fifteen minutes to go, Groningen’s chances of a comeback were ended when Juninho Bacuna was shown a straight red for a late challenge on Terence Kongolo. Despite the extra man, Feyenoord couldn’t add any extra goals before full time, but they now move eight points clear and put the pressure on Ajax and PSV, who play on Sunday.
Another solid performance from Van Der Heijden in defence. Toornstra has been a different player this season too.
