A stunning second half strike by Arber Zeneli earned Heerenveen a 2-2 draw at leaders Feyenoord.

fey-hee-fHeerenveen have been the surprise package in the Eredivisie so far this season and they traveled to Rotterdam full of confidence and undefeated in their last nine games. Five minutes into the tie at De Kuip the Frisian’s took the lead as Arber Zeneli picked out Reza Ghoochannejhad at the front post and the attacker prodded the ball into the net.

Feyenoord almost responded moments later but their former goalkeeper Erwin Mulder pulled off a great save to deny Nicolai Jorgensen’s header before Dirk Kuyt fired the rebound over the bar. On 25 minutes the league leaders did equalise and it was Jorgensen who beat Mulder with a low strike after Bilal Basacikoglu’s through ball.

With five minutes to go in the first half Feyenoord were awarded a penalty with Basacikoglu tripped by Jerry St Juste in the box. Dirk Kuyt’s spot kick was excellently saved by Mulder but Rick Karsdorp followed up on the rebound to net.

Feyenoord failed to build on their lead early in the second half and on the hour mark Heerenveen equalised with Zeneli firing a stunning 30 yard strike past Brad Jones.

The hosts then went in search of the winner but Mulder saved well from Jorgensen, who also missed another chance late on as Heerenveen earned a point.

The draw means Feyenoord’s lead at the top is cut to just three points, while Heerenveen are fourth.
