The home side went into the game having scored goals for fun recently in the league, and it didn’t take long for them to take the lead in De Kuip. Former Feyenoord defender Kelvin Leerdam fluffed his lines, allowing Eljero Elia to pounce.
Vitesse, who won their previous two games, were counter-attacking Feyenoord with some purpose in the first-half, and levelled in fine style after Adnane Tighadouini volleyed in Milot Rashica’s right-wing delivery.
On the stroke of half-time, the hosts scored again as Berghuis beat the offside trap to nod in.
Feyenoord began the second-half with more intensity in search of the killer third goal. That came just before the hour mark when Dirk Kuyt shimmied the ball into the path of Berghuis who finished sublimely to put his side into a position from which Vitesse never recovered.
The win leaves Feyenoord with 42 points from 17 games. Vitesse sit eighth.
