Rutten will step down at the end of the season after only one year in charge, and despite neither having any experience of being a head coach, Jean-Paul van Gastel and Giovanni van Bronckhorst are the two favourites for the job.
VI are reporting that Feyenoord director Martin van Geel has held informal talks with the duo over their future’s at the club, but a decision over which one will take over from Rutten is not near, with the club determined to take their time.
Van Gastel and Van Bronckhorst were both named as assistants to former coach Ronald Koeman, and kept their positions when Fred Rutten took over last summer. Both are said to welcome the challenge of stepping up to the head coach role.
