Feyenoord have consolidated third spot in the Eredivisie after coming from behind to defeat AZ Alkmaar 2-1 in De Kuip.

Four points separated the two sides heading into the clash with AZ needing a win to have any chance of taking third spot from the Rotterdam side, who welcomed Robin van Persie back to the starting line-up.

Feyenoord controlled possession early on and in the fifteenth minute they got their first big chance but Jonas Svensson cleared van Persie’s effort off the line.

AZ were dangerous on the counter and in the 38th minute they had the lead. Adam Maher’s ball across the box was worked into the net by Mats Seuntjens.

Six minutes into the second half the ball dropped to Tyrell Malacia on the edge of the box and the left-back hammered an unstoppable strike past Marco Bizot to make it 1-1.

After the goal, Feyenoord kept control and eventually the lead came in the 68th minute when van Persie slotted in a Jeremiah St Juste cross.

Myron Boadu made his long awaited comeback from injury for AZ but the away side couldn’t find an equaliser.

Feyenoord are now seven points clear of AZ in third with only three games left.
