The 32-year-old, who’s contract was up in the summer, has not been part of Fred Rutten’s plans since he took over as Feyenoord coach, making only seven league appearances this season.
Rutten decided to leave Schaken behind for the clubs winter training camp in Dubai, and Feyenoord have now announced that they have agreed to terminate the remaining months of his contract.
Feyenoord director Martin van Geel stated on the clubs official site, “This is the best solution for both parties. Ruben can now make the move to another club.”
Schaken himself added, “For me it’s nice that there is clarity. I still feel fit and hope for a great new challenge.”
“I was allowed to play for four and a half years at this great club, it is something I am sincerely proud of. A fantastic time.”
Schaken who has also played for Veendam, Cambuur, and VVV-Venlo, made 136 appearances for Feyenoord, scoring 18 times, assisting 29 times and earning seven caps for the Dutch national team.
Heerenveen have recently been credited with a move for Schaken, and they could firm up their interest now the winger is a free agent.
