Feyenoord kept their hopes of finishing second alive last week when they drew with PSV Eindhoven but they wanted three points against Emmen on Saturday.
The hosts struggled to find a way past Emmen goalkeeper Michael Verrips but in the 37th minute, Orkun Kokcu broke the deadlock with a strike deflected off Miguel Aruajo.
Emmen grew into the game in the second half and Nick Marsman had to keep out an effort by Sergio Pena. At the other end, Luis Sinisterra saw a header cleared off the line.
Feyenoord failed to kill the game and they were punished by Emmen in the 79th minute. Lutsharel Geetruida was deemed to have fouled Canar Cavlan by VAR, and Michael de Leeuw netted from the penalty spot.
Advocaat threw on Robert Bozenik and new January signing Aliou Balde but they could not find a late winner.
The draw means Feyenoord remains fifth and now seven points behind PSV. Emmen remains bottom.
