With Robin van Persie out, Giovanni van Bronckhorst brought Steven Berghuis back into the starting line-up as Feyenoord looked for a victory to put them back to within a point of AZ.
From the start, Feyenoord were on top and in the 20th minute, Nicolai Jorgensen had the ball in the net. However, the goal was disallowed for a foul by Sam Larsson in the build-up.
Ten minutes later, Jorgensen had the ball in the net again after some poor defending and this time the goal stood. Minutes later, Steven Berghuis thought he had made it 2-0 but VAR intervened again and Bjorn Kuipers ruled it out for Jens Toornstra being offside in the build-up.
Eight minutes into the second half, Feyenoord eventually made it 2-0 with Sam Larsson playing Berghuis into the box and he fired low past Warner Hahn into the bottom corner.
Heerenveen barely troubled the hosts and with twenty minutes left Tonny Vilhena sealed the victory with a simple finish from close range.
Feyenoord remains fourth but are now only one point behind AZ while Heerenveen sit 10th.
