After an awful run of results, Feyenoord finally earned a win last weekend against Groningen and they hoped that would give them confidence going into a tricky looking tie with Vitesse.
In the ninth minute, Feyenoord took the lead with Sofyan Amrabat combining with Steven Berghuis before setting up Nicolai Jorgensen to net.
After the opener, Vitesse came into the game and they began to trouble a Feyenoord defence which looked short of confidence. The visitors thought they should have been awarded a penalty when Milot Rashica collided with Miquel Nelom in the box, but the referee waved play on.
Through Rashica and Mason Mount Vitesse remained dangerous, but Feyenoord came close to doubling their lead with Tonny Vilhena sending a header just wide.
After the break, the chances were few and far between. Jorgensen came the closest to netting with a shot on the turn which went wide as Feyenoord held on for the three points.
The win lifts Feyenoord to fifth while Vitesse are seventh.
