The home side dominated the early proceedings and were ahead after 21 minutes with Jens Toornstra finding Dirk Kuyt with a corner, and the veteran headed in his 17th goal of the season.
Just after the half hour mark it was 2-0 for Feyenoord as Kuyt won the ball back on the left, before finding Toornstra, and the midfielder earned his second assist of the game as he set up Eljero Elia to fire into the net from just inside the box.
Toornstra then made it a hat-trick of assists on 58 minutes as his scuffed shot was tapped in at close range by Kuyt for his second goal of the night. Michiel Kramer nearly made it 4-0 before the end, but the striker was denied by Tom Muyters.
The victory for Feyenoord moves them five points clear in third, while Excelsior sit 16th.
A nice solid win vs. a lessor team. We dominated them all match long-they way we should vs lesser teams. 5 games to go and we have a 5 point lead for 3rd. win 4 out of the last 5 and we are secure in that position and the european football that comes along with it. After our streak of bad play at the first of the year this is 6 games in a row without a loss. Nice to see the team growing and getting better as the season progresses.
