Feyenoord’s poor league form continued in Kerkrade on Saturday with the defending champions held to a 1-1 draw by struggling Roda JC.

Following the defeat to Ajax last weekend, Giovanni van Bronckhorst decided to drop Jean-Paul Boetius and Sofyan Amrabat to the bench with Sam Larsson and Kevin Diks coming into the starting eleven, while Bart Nieuwkoop continued at right-back.

Feyenoord got off to the perfect start with Steven Berghuis cutting in from the right on 11 minutes before firing a shot past Hidde Jurjus from outside the area. However, Roda JC were level six minutes later when Simon Gustafson, on loan from Feyenoord, sent Dani Schahin through on goal and the midfielder held off Karim El Ahmadi before slotting the ball past Brad Jones.

The visitors dominated after the equaliser, but struggled on Roda’s artificial pitch to create chances. Sam Larsson went close with a free kick, while Jens Toornstra fired a good chance straight at Jurjus.

Six minutes into the second half, Tonny Vilhena got a great chance to put Feyenoord back in front, but after being played in on goal the midfielder slipped over and that allowed Jurjus to clear.

Nicolai  Jørgensen, El Ahmadi, Kevin Diks and Boetius all had chances to net the winning goal, but Jurjus remained unbeaten and Roda JC held on to take a point.

Feyenoord now slip to fifth and could be ten points off leaders PSV, if they beat Vitesse tomorrow. Roda JC stay 17th.
