Feyenoord headed into the weekend sitting top of the table, while Sparta were at the bottom. A home win was expected with Dick Advocaat selecting the same eleven that hammered Willem II 4-1 last time out.
The two teams were even from kick-off and chances were few and far between before Ridgeciano Haps fired Feyenoord ahead just before the break.
Seven minutes into the second half, Uros Spajic fouled Abdou Harroui, and Lennart Thy equalised for Sparta from the penalty spot.
Feyenoord then lost Leroy Fer to a hamstring injury as Sparta began to sense an opportunity. Advocaat turned to Nicolai Jorgensen but the Dane could not help the hosts find the winner.
Just before the end, Sparta almost grabbed the three points but Justin Bijlow made a phenomenal save to deny Deroy Duarte.
Feyenoord remain top on goal difference but could lose the spot before the end of the evening. Sparta climb to 17th.
