Clint Leemans late penalty saw VVV Venlo earn a 1-0 win over Feyenoord.

Feyenoord went into the game on the back of their impressive cup win over PSV in midweek but they struggled to deal with VVV’s artificial surface on Sunday.

The best chances of the first half fell to the hosts but Johnatan Opoku couldn’t connect with the ball at close range, while Karim El Ahmadi was lucky to see his attempted clearance tipped over the bar by Brad Jones.

After the break, Feyenoord went close through Jens Toornstra but VVV continued to dominate and Vito van Crooij passed up several opportunities to break the deadlock. With ten minutes left, Giovanni van Bronckhorst swapped Nicolai Jorgensen for Robin van Persie, but the change didn’t bring the winning goal.

Instead, with five minutes left Romeo Castelen burst in on goal and was brought down by Renato Tapia. The referee deemed the foul was inside the box and pointed to the spot. Clint Leemans beat Jones to earn VVV a deserved victory.

Feyenoord now remain fourth and seven points off AZ. VVV climb to ninth.
