The Rotterdam club have agreed a fee of around €2.5 million with Groningen for the defender, who signed a four-year deal after completing his medical in Rotterdam. Botteghin could now make his debut for the club in Sunday’s tie with Cambuur.
Botteghin started his career with Zwolle, making 103 appearances for the club before moving to NAC Breda in 2011. After two years in Breda, Botteghin then made the step up to Groningen, where he has made 84 appearances, scoring five goals.
The 27-year-old is Feyenoord’s seventh signing of the summer after deals for Dirk Kuyt, Eljero Elia, Michiel Kramer, Marko Vejinovic, Jan-Arie van der Heijden, and Simon Gustafson.
Feyenoord are obviously entering “win-now” mode, sacrificing the development of youngsters for a chance to secure the title. That’s quite understandable, especially with the ambition of GvB to follow the footsteps of his ex-oranje-teammates de Boer and Cocu, but it’s a pity that the duo of Sven van Beek and Kongolo won’t have as much playing time as last year. They really were the most exciting young pair of centre-backs in Eredivisie.
Yes! Another great move! Wilkshire has been released so no real loss.
it is about time that feyenoord tries to win the championship. 16 years is far to long for the club to have no titles. Youth alone will never win. Most of the “prospects” don’t pan out and those that do leave for greener pastures.
Coming into this summer Feyenoord only had 2 true CD’s on the team: Kongolo and Van Beek. Now we have 4 guys. 2 of those 4 can also move outside and play back. I would not be surprised to see a back 4 of Kongolo at LB, van heiden(spelling) at LCB, Van Beek at RCB, and Botteghin rotating with Karsdorp ar RB. Those 5 will play 99% of the minutes for the back 4 the rest of the year. That should be the best backline in the Eeredivisie.
