Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side looked far from the Feyenoord team which was struggling in the league as they dominated the first half, barely allowing AZ Alkmaar out of their own half. However, despite their dominance Feyenoord went into the break only one goal ahead as Tonny Vilhena’s corner disappeared into the net off Markus Henriksen.
The away side had time to regroup at half time and a minute into the second half Henriksen found the right net as the midfielder tapped in Ridgeciano Haps cross.
The goal took all the wind out of Feyenoords sails and AZ started to take control with Kenneth Vermeer having to save well from Henriksen, while Dabney Dos Santos struck the post. However, against the run of play Feyenoord retook the lead on 78 minutes when Jens Toornstra found Michiel Kramer in space and the striker calmly fired past Sergio Rochet.
Former Feyenoord captain Ron Vlaar then sealed AZ’s exit from the competition as his slip in the box took out Terence Kongolo, and resulted in a penalty. Dirk Kuyt slotted in from the spot to book Feyenoord’s place in the final against Utrecht, who beat VVSB on Wednesday.
The final is on April 24th and will take place at De Kuip.
A great game and a great win! Folks forgot how good this team really is. When focused and with confidence we can beat any team in Holland. Yes we still need more depth and talent but we are pretty good.
