Utrecht were unlucky not to take the lead after seven minutes, with Jens Toornstra’s excellent free kick crashing back off the bar.
Feyenoord pushed forward, and found the opening goal on 34 minutes, with Graziano Pelle chesting a long ball into the path of Tonny Vilhena, and the midfielder fired a low shot through Ruiter, into the net.
Utrecht nearly had an equaliser before half time, but Yassine Ayoub’s header was calmly cleared off the line by Jordy Clasie.
Ten minutes into the second half, Ayoub turned provider for Willem Janssen, but his shot was well saved by Erwin Mulder from around six yards out.
Feyenoord went straight up the other end, and Jordy Clasie’s shot from the edge of the box was well saved by Ruiter who palmed it to safety.
With ten minutes left, Pelle should have made sure of the win, but his header from John Goossens corner was too close to Ruiter. The Italian forward then missed another free header, with only two minutes left.
Vilhena’s goal proved to be the winner for Feyenoord, and lifts the Rotterdam side up the table after a slow start, while Utrecht stay in the bottom half.
