FIFA president Gianni Infantino has not ruled out a BeNeLiga forming in the near future.

The Belgian and Netherlands football associations have been in intensive talks for over a year and several clubs are open to the possibility of a joint league.

The idea has been around for a long time but FIFA and UEFA have always been against it, preferring separate competitions for each country.

However, speaking in Qatar ahead of the Club World Cup final, Infantino said, “We must be open to discussion. The Belgians and the Dutch have talked about establishing a BeNeLiga. These talks have been going on for twenty years and we have always said no because we are sticking to national competitions.”

Infantino believes the idea could help bridge the gap to the biggest leagues in the world, “But maybe this helps,. Maybe it’s the only way out?” Maybe we should think about this here in Europe and maybe in Africa too. I’ve already suggested something like that for Africa.

“I think it’s our duty to study things like this, and we’ll see where it goes.”
