Former FC Twente and Newcastle United midfielder Cheik Tiote has sadly passed away after collapsing during a training session on Monday.

The 30-year-old collapsed during a training session with his club Beijing Enterprises, who play in the Chinese second division, and later died in hospital.

The spokesman for Tiote, Emanuele Palladino announced the sad news in a statement, which read, “It is with deep sadness I confirm that Cheick Tiote sadly passed away earlier today after collapsing in training.

“We cannot say any more at the moment and we request that his family’s privacy be respected at this difficult time. We ask for all your prayers.”

Born in the Ivory Coast, Tiote started his career with Anderlecht before he joined FC Twente in 2005. He made 86 appearances for the Tukkers and was part of the squad that lifted the Eredivisie title in 2010. He then joined Newcastle United in the Premier League before leaving England for China last February.

Everyone at Football-Oranje would like to express our condolences to Cheik Tiote’s family at this horrible time.
