Emmen will remain in the bottom three this weekend after a 3-1 defeat at Fortuna Sittard.

The hosts went into the game on the back of four straight defeats and were only one point above Emmen, who are 16th.

After only two minutes, Fortuna Sittard had the lead following a scramble in the box. A corner led to Caner Cavlan heading off the line but the ball was worked into the net by Calvin Mac-Intosh via Emmen defender Andrej Lukic.

Emmen then went in search of an equaliser but Michael de Leeuw’s header was brilliantly kept out by Alexei Koselev, who tipped the ball onto the bar.

The visitors looked the better side but in the 18th minute, Lisandro Semedo fired Fortuna Sittard 2-0 ahead. Just before the break, it was 3-0 when Andrija Novakovich headed in Jorrit Smeets cross.

Mark Diemers thought he had made it 4-0 early in the second half but his excellent strike was ruled out by VAR for offside. Moments later, VAR intervened again after Bijl brought down Novakovich, who was racing through on goal. A yellow card was initially shown but that turned into a red.

With ten men, Emmen’s chances of a comeback were over but they did pull one goal back before the end through substitute Reuven Niemeijer

The win lifts Fortuna Sittard up to 12th while Emmen stay in big trouble.
