Jong Ajax sealed the Eerste Divisie title on Saturday evening while Fortuna Sittard gained promotion to the Eredivisie.

Jong Ajax went into their game with MVV Maastricht one point ahead of Fortuna Sittard at the top. MVV took the lead in the second half through a Nwakali penalty, but goals from Kaj Sierhuis and Mateo Cassierra turned the game around and sealed the title for Michael Reiziger’s side. It is the first time a youth team has lifted the Eerste Divisie schaal.

However, Jong Ajax can’t be promoted which meant the automatic place in the Eredivisie went to Fortuna Sittard, who beat Jong PSV 1-0 thanks to a Finn Stokkers goal. It will be the first time that Fortuna has appeared in the top flight since they were relegated in the 2001/02 season.

NEC had a chance of promotion going into the final game of the season but Fortuna’s win meant they had no chance of sneaking into second spot. They could only manage a 3-3 draw at Dordrecht anyway and will have to settle for a spot in the playoffs.
