On his decision, De Boer told NOS, “I have always given 100 percent and I noticed that it was costing me more and more energy. I look forward to embracing the feeling of when you begin with a new club.

“I thought about leaving Ajax last year but I decided to continue for another season and due to that I am now mentally tired.

“I demand a lot of energy from my players and they can expect the same from their manager when I can’t give that anymore then it is time to stop.”

Reflecting on his time with Ajax, he added, “I have had a fantastic time here at Ajax first as a player and the last 10 seasons as a manager of the D1 to the A1 youth teams. Then shortly after that Ajax gave me the opportunity to manage the first team and for that I will always be grateful.”
