The 30-year-old midfielder was out of favour with Marseille and could not count on any playing time for the rest of the season.
With the view of getting a spot in Frank de Boer’s Netherlands squad for the upcoming European Championships, Strootman has decided to join Genoa on loan until the end of the season.
The former PSV Eindhoven star is back in Italy three years after departing AS Roma. He joins a club in a relegation battle, though, with Genoa struggling down in 17th.
