PSV have confirmed Wijnaldum has now left the rest of the squad in France, who have been training there ahead of friendlies against Basel, Lyon, and Monaco. He will speak to Newcastle’s representatives to discuss terms ahead of move which could rise to around €20 million. It is understood that Wijnaldum has already agreed provisional terms with the Magpies and these now just need to be finalised. Once agreed, he will undertake a medical examination and the club hope to wrap the deal up before departing on their pre-season tour of the United States.

Newcastle head coach Steve McClaren is a long term admirer of the PSV captain, having first recognised his talents whilst coach of Twente. The midfielder was a Feyenoord player then and the Rotterdam club could be set to pick up around €1.5 million of the final transfer fee.

Wijnaldum would add to the sizeable Dutch contingent on Tyneside and should not have any trouble settling in; Vurnon Anita, Daryl Janmaat, Siem de Jong, and Tim Krul are all familiar faces.

He will be McClaren’s first signing for Newcastle if he can convince the Dutchman to swap Champions League football for the side who finished 15th in last seasons Premier League.
