Paul Gladon earned Groningen a 1-1 draw at Heerenveen in the Derby of the North.

Both sides went into the game looking for a win to boost their chances of reaching the European playoffs.

Heerenveen were without striker Sam Lammers, but his replacement up front, Pelle van Amersfoort, was the one who broke the deadlock in the 38th minute. The forward headed in Lucas Woudenberg’s cross at the front post.

Groningen improved after the break but Warner Hahn kept Heerenveen in front with two good saves to deny Kaj Sierhuis.

Paul Gladon had netted the winner off the bench for Groningen in their last two matches and the supersub was once again his side’s hero. On the hour mark, Gladon worked an Ilias Bel Hassani cross past Hahn to make it 1-1.

After the equaliser, Groningen pushed for a winner but Hahn kept them out and Heerenveen held on for a point.

Groningen drop to ninth while Heerenveen are 10th.
