Erik ten Hag rung the changes to the side that slumped to a penalty defeat to Cambuur in the cup midweek with Richairo Zivkovic, Yassin Ayoub and Nacer Barazite all replaced by Patrick Joosten, Gyrano Kerk and Andreas Ludwig.
The changes proved crucial as Utrecht took the lead in the first half with Go Ahead Eagles defender Xandro Schenk netting an own goal under pressure from Kerk.
At the break, Go Ahead Eagles boss Hans de Koning decided to swap Elvis Manu for Darren Maatsen. However, the substitute was only on the field for fifteen minutes before seeing red for an altercation with Mark van der Maarel.
Despite the extra man, Utrecht couldn’t add to their lead and before the end Jarchinio Antonia nearly equalised, but he was stopped by a terrific challenge from right back Giovanni Troupee.
The victory sees Utrecht remain in sixth while Go Ahead Eagles will return to the bottom of the table.
