A 93rd-minute winner by Mimoun Mahi earned Groningen a win at Go Ahead Eagles which all but confirms the Deventer side’s relegation.

The hosts were in desperate need of a win to keep their chances of safety alive but they fell behind on 37 minutes when Mahi brought down a long ball before slotting it into the net.

Go Ahead Eagles searched for the equaliser which eventually came in the 74th minute when Elvis Manu played through Sam Hendriks and the striker fired past Sergio Padt.

Five minutes later Groningen restored their lead through Jesper Drost who latched onto a terrific pass by Juninho Bacuna and although the midfielder stumbled he eventually slotted the ball past a grounded Theo Zwarthoed.

Go Ahead seemed to earn themselves a point when Daniel Maatsen fired in at the back post with two minutes to go, but in injury time Mahi raced through on the hosts goal unchallenged, rounded Zwarthoed and chipped in the winning goal.

Go Ahead Eagles are now five points adrift at the bottom with two games to go. Groningen remain 10th.
