Willem II went into the relegation battle without Erik Falkenburg, who dropped into the bench in favour of 19-year-old Jari Schuurman, who is on loan from Feyenoord.
It was the first time that Schuurman had started in the Eredivisie and he repaid his manager’s faith by netting the only goal of the game on 49 minutes. The midfielder raced through on goal and although his first attempt was saved by Theo Zwarthoed, Schuurman netted on the rebound.
The opener was deserved for Willem II, who had the better chances in the first half and they nearly made it 2-0 soon after Schuurman’s goal but Thom Haye’s goalbound effort was blocked on the line.
Go Ahead Eagles should have equalised late on when Sander Fischer had a free header in the box, but the defender couldn’t net and Willem II held on for a precious three points.
Willem II rise to 12th while Go Ahead Eagles remain 17th.
