vriendsAfter a poor start to the season, Go Ahead Eagles went into the game without a win in their opening three matches, while Willem II were on a high after beating AZ Alkmaar 3-0 last week.

Go Ahead Eagles dominated the possession in the early stages off the match, but it was Willem II who created the best chances and they were unlucky not to take the lead when Terell Ondaan’s strike came back off the post.

As the first half went on the home side took control, and Deniz Turuc was also denied by the woodwork, while Marnix Kolder also sent a long distance effort wide.

Early in the second half Willem II were reduced to ten men after Jonas Weymans saw red for his second yellow, and on 64 minutes Go Ahead found the opening goal with Bart Vreinds heading in from close range from Maikel van der Werff’s delivery.

The goalscorer was then shown a straight red card five minutes later for hitting out at an opponent, which gave Willem II the chance to come back into the match, but Go Ahead Eagles hung on to claim all three points.

The win lifts Go Ahead Eagles up to 11th in the table, while Willem II sit 14th.
