Go Ahead Eagles have been knocked out of the Europa League in the first qualifying round after a 5-2 aggregate defeat to Hungarian side Ferencvaros.

ferencThe first leg ended 1-1 in Emmen last week, but any chance of Go Ahead Eagles securing their place in the next round quickly evaporated in Hungary.

After only three minutes Zoltan Gera, who scored Ferencvaros goal in Netherlands last week, opened the scoring with a strike from the edge of the box which seemed to catch goalkeeper Erik Cummins by surprise. The goalkeeper then gifted the Hungarian side their 2nd goal on 20 minutes when his attempted clearance only found Dániel Bode, who finished calmly.

Ferencvaros then ended the tie on the stroke of half time with Cummins failing to close down Roland Lamah quick enough and the winger picked out Attila Busai, who slid the ball into the empty net ahead of a static Go Ahead defence.

Lamah failed to extend the home side’s lead from the penalty spot after a handball by Kenny Teijsse, but Ferencvaros eventually added a fourth three minutes before the end as Zsolt Haraszti received the ball in the box before beating the hapless Cummins.

Deniz Turuc pulled a goal back for Go Ahead in injury time, but their first ever experience of European football is over.
