The points were shared in the derby of the north as Heerenveen held Groningen to a 1-1 draw at the Euroborg.

heegroderbyThe noisy home crowd were sent into raptures after six minutes when Michael de Leeuw spun in the box before sending a low shot past Kristoffer Nordfeldt to give Groningen a perfect start.

However Heerenveen came back into the game on 25 minutes with Luciano Slagveer’s shot from the edge of the box diverting into the net of the boot of Mark Uth. The German forward should have given his side a half time lead, but his shot from inside the area was deflected inches past the post.

The second half was a dire affair but it was Heerenveen who created the best chances to win the match, Uth forcing Sergio Padt into a good save, while a corner was diverted against the post by a Groningen defender.

Groningen remain 7th with a point, while Heerenveen, without a win in nine games, now sit 12th.
