The home side began the match in the ascendancy with Nick Marsman forced into a good save to deny the troubling Bryan Linssen, before keeping out Jarchinio Antonia’s shot on the counter.
Twente, who left Jesus Corona on the bench after his involvement in the Gold Cup, barely threatened in the first half, but they went into the break ahead after Renato Tapia headed in a corner from new captain Hakim Ziyech.
Groningen pushed for an equaliser in the second half and it eventually came in the 85th minute as Danny Hoesen played in Michael de Leeuw, who calmly slotted into the corner past Marsman. The home side nearly snatched the win soon after but Eric Botteghin’s close range header flew over the bar.
After a summer of change, Twente will be happy with a point, while Groningen will be disappointed that they could not beat the Enschede side despite their domination.
