Ajax rounded off a horrible week with another defeat as they were beaten 2-0 by Groningen in the Euroborg.

grontAjax went into the match looking to shake off last week’s defeat to PSV Eindhoven, while they were missing Daley Blind who is set to seal his move to Manchester United in the coming hours.

The visitors were the better side in the first half with Davy Klaassen seeing a close range shot blocked by Eric Botteghin, while Kolbeinn Sigthorsson wasted a huge opportunity when electing to pass the ball to Anwar El Ghazi instead of shooting, after being put through by Lasse Schone.

However, Groningen flew out the traps in the second half and took the lead as Tjarron Chery’s great ball across the box was tapped into the net by centre back Eric Botteghin.

Ajax increased the pressure on the Groningen goal as they looked for an equaliser, but Anwar El Ghazi’s wayward shot from a tight angle was the closest they came to an equaliser. The home side sealed their first win over the champions for three years in the final few minutes with super-sub Michael de Leeuw stooping to head Chery’s cross past Jasper Cillessen.

Ajax have now lost two games in a row for only the second time under Frank de Boer, and with only one day left in the transfer window, time is running out for the club to splash the Daley Blind cash. Groningen move up to 2nd with their third win of the season.
