After a good start to the season the wheels have come off for PEC Zwolle recently, with three defeats in their last four league games. Coach Ron Jans decided to ring the changes on Saturday with attackers Lars Veldwijk and Sheraldo Becker dropped, but they were once again on the end of a defeat, this time to a clinical Groningen.
After four minutes Jarchinio Antonia’s cross was headed past Kevin Begois by Michael de Leeuw, and although PEC Zwolle pushed for an equaliser, Groningen made it 2-0 on the half hour mark with Lorenzo Burnet finishing off Jesper Drost’s pass.
PEC Zwolle should have pulled a goal back ten minutes into the second half but after Wouter Marinus’s first effort was pushed out by Sergio Padt, substitute Sheraldo Becker could only fire into the side netting with the goal gaping.
Groningen held on comfortably for the three points which lifts Edwin van de Looi’s side up to seventh and level on points with PEC Zwolle, who remain sixth on goal difference.
