The home side went into the game on the back of a 2-1 defeat in Marseille midweek and after 18 minutes they found themselves behind as Edouard Duplan out-jumped Johan Kappelhof to head ADO in front.
Groningen created several chances of the opener, but Jesper Drost, Michael de Leeuw, and Jarchinio Antonia all failed to level the score before the break. Four minutes into the second half though, the scores were level with Tom Beugelsdijk scoring an unfortunate own goal.
The game was heading for a draw but in the fourth minute of injury time a free kick landed at Danny Hoesen’s feet and the striker tapped in from close range to seal all three points.
Groningen are now up to sixth in the league, while ADO Den Haag sit 14th.
