Substitute Danny Hoesen’s excellent late strike handed Groningen a 2-1 victory over Willem II in the Euroborg.

gro wil rusGroningen have found goals hard to come by this season with only eight in their opening eight games, but in Mimoun Mahi they have one of the most in-form attackers in the league. It came as no surprise that it was the Netherlands U21 international who opened the scoring on 24 minute with a calm finish after being played through on goal by Albert Rusnak. His fifth goal of the season.

The home side then failed to put the game to bed, with Bryan Linssen guilty of missing some good chances and five minutes before the end Willem II found an unexpected equaliser. A corner caused mayhem in front of goal, and Etienne Reijnen diverted the ball into his own net despite the best efforts of Sergio Padt in the Groningen goal.

However two minutes later Groningen restored their lead and sealed the win through substitute Danny Hoesen, who sent the ball into the top corner with an excellent finish on the turn.

The win lifts Groningen to eighth while Willem II sit sixteenth.
