Groningen have come out victorious in the derby of the north after a 3-1 win over Heerenveen at the Euroborg.

Groningen - HeerenveenThe home side asserted their dominance from the beginning of the match, and after only forty seconds Danny Hoesen fired them ahead from close range after Bryan Linssen’s parried shot caused mayhem in the Heerenveen box.

Groningen’s midfield duo of Hedwiges Maduro and Simon Tibbling dominated the tempo, and on 16 minutes the latter played an excellent ball over the top of Heerenveen’s defence for Linssen to bring down and slot past Erwin Mulder for the second goal.

Heerenveen squandered a good chance to get back into the game just before the break when Luciano Slagveer shot straight at Sergio Padt, but with twenty minutes left Simon Thern did reduce the deficit with a powerful strike from the edge of the box.

However Groningen sealed the win late on as substitute Mimoun Mahi picked up a loose clearance from Mulder before jinking into the box and lifting the ball into the net.

Groningen rise to ninth in the table with the win, one place above Heerenveen.
